Day 19 Cruise track update

Cruise track as of 14 Apr 2012
The map above shows our cruise track of the 2500 or so nautical miles that we have covered so far. The position data comes from the GPS unit of the Ship Control System (SCS). The raw data is not only useful for drawing maps (like the one above), but I also worked out how long we had spent south of 60°S latitude (i.e. within the Antarctic Treaty zone). It came to a total of 4 days, 10 hours, 15 minutes and 43 seconds.

We are now close to South Georgia, and scheduled to arrive at Bird Island tomorrow (Sunday 15th April). The British Antarctic Survey maintains a research base on the island, and we are the last ship to call before the (southern) winter. We'll be re-stocking the base with food and other supplies and we'll also take their rubbish away. Everyone on board is drafted in to manhandle cargo for the day, but hopefully there'll be some time to see the wildlife.
